Climate

Miyazaki sits in southern Japan and has a humid subtropical climate. It is one of
the sunniest prefectures in the country, and when the rain does come it tends to
arrive in concentrated bursts rather than in grey weeks.

Winter is dry and sunny, averaging 4–14 °C. There is no snow in the coastal
cities, while the highlands around Ebino and Takachiho get enough snow and frost
for a proper winter landscape.

Spring averages 11.8–20.9 °C. Cherry blossom is usually from the end of March
into the beginning of April.

The rainy season (tsuyu) starts around the end of May and runs to roughly the
middle of July. Plenty of bright days in between the downpours, and the countryside is at its
greenest.

Summer is wet and humid, averaging 22.9–29.8 °C. The official ocean swim
season with lifeguards runs from the end of the rainy season to the end of August —
see Miyazaki Beach for this year’s dates by
beach. Typhoons usually reach Miyazaki in late summer and early autumn. They are forecast several days ahead and usually pass
within about three days — a good excuse for an onsen, a museum or a long lunch.

Autumn averages 15.7–24.3 °C, with many clear sunny days. Typhoon season
overlaps the start of it, but once that passes it is arguably the best time to
visit.

Miyazaki has something to offer in every season!
