Miyazaki Beach

Miyazaki’s official swim season runs from early July to the end of August, when
the main beaches are staffed, marked out and at their liveliest. The city sets
the exact dates each year and they differ from beach to beach, so it is worth a
quick check before you travel.

Aoshima Beach

This beach is great for surfing. During swimming season adults cannot go in further than standing depth, in order to keep the marked area safe for children.

Sun Beach Hitotsuba

A long stretch of sand north of the river, split into a marine-sports zone and a
supervised swimming zone. Patrolled through the same July–August window as Aoshima.

Shirahama Beach

Ten minutes’ walk down from Aoshima beach, Shirahama is the quiet one. There are some shops, a shower, and parking for 500 yen.

Shirahama is not one of the city’s designated swimming beaches, which is exactly
why it stays so peaceful — it is at its best as a walk, a picnic and a sunset.
For a swim, Aoshima is ten minutes back up the beach, with the lifeguards and
the marked zone.

Beaches in Nobeoka (North Miyazaki)

Nobeoka arguably has the best beaches for swimming in Miyazaki Prefecture.

In Nobeoka we recommend Sumie Beach for a nice splash in the ocean.
There is more than enough parking and some shops, but it is very relaxed. It takes about 1.5 hours by highway from Miyazaki City, but it is worth it.

Sumie’s 2026 swim season is 11 July – 31 August — a slightly different window
from the Miyazaki City beaches. The dates are set fresh each year, so confirm
with Nobeoka tourism before you
drive up.

The supervised day runs 08:30–17:00. That is not posted anywhere online, but a
chime sounds over the beach at closing time and the showers are shut off with
it, so plan the afternoon around 17:00 rather than around sunset.

Shimo Aso beach is another good choice —
same 11 July – 31 August 2026 season,
with a river pool next to the sand for children who are wary of the ocean.
